Fresh Food Storage

So, you go to the farmer’s market and buy a ton of fresh stuff, more than you think you might use. The next big question is how to store it so it lasts as long as possible. There are plenty of guides out there with more details, but here’s my broad strokes.

Room temperature

  • tomatoes (stem side down if possible)

  • onions

  • potatoes

  • sweet potatoes

  • peppers

  • squash

  • eggplant

Fridge as is

  • eggs

  • carrots (can trim tops if you want)

  • green beans

  • broccoli

  • cauliflower

  • cucumbers

  • radishes

Fridge with extra steps

  • mushrooms - keep in paper bag

  • greens of any sort, including herbs - wrap in damp paper towel, then put in either zip-top bag or other plastic bag

  • brussels sprouts - in a plastic bag

  • asparagus - cut the woody ends off, place in a jar or glass of water, cover tops with a plastic bag

  • corn - loose fitting plastic bag

  • kohlrabi - trim leaves, wrap in damp paper towel, then put in zip-top bag

  • beets - trim stems to an inch or so, then store in plastic bag

We’ll cover freezing in another post, but bread is one you can throw in the freezer whole with no other steps.
